Roommates… a familiar name is back in the headlines, and this time it’s coming straight from behind bars. Tory Lanez is once again pushing for freedom, and according to his legal team, newly surfaced information could change the way people look at his conviction. While the public thought this chapter was closed, Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, says recent developments have reopened the door. And, he’s asking the system to take another look.

Tory Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence following his 2022 conviction in the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. In his first broadcast interview from prison, Lanez told NBC News that he believes he was wrongfully convicted. Additionally, he claims that new evidence has surfaced since the trial, which he says is “overwhelming.” Despite maintaining his innocence since the incident in July 2020, Lanez says he’s now focused on healing.
New Document Emerges From Megan’s Civil Lawsuit Claims
According to his attorney, Crystal Morgan, the alleged new evidence came to light during Megan Thee Stallion’s recent civil defamation lawsuit against blogger Milagro Cooper — a case Megan won earlier this month. Cooper’s attorney, Ronda Dixon, says she reviewed Megan’s medical records as part of that civil trial. Furthermore, she noticed a document that Lanez’s defense claims was never provided during his criminal case. Following, Dixon alerted Morgan after Lanez gave a deposition in the civil matter.
Pathology Report Sparks Questions Over Missing Evidence
That document appears to be a pathology report from Cedars-Sinai dated July 14, 2020, stating that a hospital security employee retrieved an evidence bag containing a “foreign body.” While the document does not list Megan’s name, it does match her date of birth. Morgan says this raises serious questions about whether bullet fragments were collected. She also raises curiosity on where they are now and why they were never turned over to the defense during the original trial.
Lanez’s legal team argues that if this information and the physical evidence were withheld, it could amount to a Brady violation. This is a legal rule that requires prosecutors to share potentially favorable evidence with the defense. Morgan says having access to that information could have allowed Lanez’s attorneys to challenge medical testimony or present an alternative theory to the jury. However, Morgan claims it was something they were allegedly denied the opportunity to do.
Lanez’s Defense Alleges Brady Violation, Seeks Pardon
Last month, California’s Second District Court of Appeal denied Lanez’s appeal, finding no trial errors or ineffective counsel. However, his team now plans to take the case to the California Supreme Court while also requesting clemency or a pardon from Governor Gavin Newsom. Legal experts note that proving a Brady violation is extremely difficult. And, Lanez’s team must show the outcome of the trial would have been different if they had presented the evidence.
As for Lanez, he says the case has painted him as a “monstrous person” and insists he would never harm a woman. He also revealed that his time in prison has been traumatic. Lanez noted that he was stabbed more than a dozen times earlier this year. Now, he says he’s simply asking for someone to reexamine the evidence and decide whether the process that put him behind bars was truly fair.
